OUR COMMUNITY

Arkabutla Volunteer Fire Department is located in Tate County Mississippi:

Tate County was formed in April 15,1873. and is located in the northwest corner of MS . Tate county was named for Thomas Simpson "T.S." Tate. Thomas Simpson formed Tatesville, which no longer exists. The County seat was placed at Senatobia . Senatobia got its name from the nearby Senatahoba (SENATAHOBA OR SIN-IH-TOH-BIH-A ) Creek, which means "White Sycamore" or "Black Snake".

Arkabutla is located in the northwestern part of Tate County (which was Desoto county at one time). Arkabutla's ((ahrk-uh-BUHT-luh), name was derived from a Chickasaw Indian Chieftain by the name of Arkabutla. The Arkabutla community was a thriving little area until the fire of 1913 which destroyed most of the town. The Arkabutla area was once known as Skull Bone. This area was called that after the outlaw, John A. Murrell, killed two men and hung their skulls on a bush in the area..

The first historical landmark is the two story building that housed the Masonic Lodge dedicated in 1867. There was a four room school that was built in 1886. This school house burned in1916. Here is a picture of one of the old Grammar schools and one of the High schools located in the Arkabutla community

The area where Arkabutla Fire Department Station 2 is located is known as the Cottonville Community. The Cottonville Store which just recently closed is located there. The store was built in the 1880's. The store over the years has served in many capacities. The store has been a general merchandise store, a dance hall, a voting precinct, and a Post office. The Cottonville Store has been a treasured gathering place for many years.
